Firstly lets take a look at how a mala is made up.... So as you can see there is more to a mala bead than just a string of beads!!! Each part of the mala has a purpose and an intention, also depending on the theme or intention when the mala bead is made will also play a part. Its good to know this, so when your working with your mala bead you have a deeper understanding of the energy behind it, that you are connecting in with. So now you choose your mantra, this might be one you've chosen for its specific Naad current and meaning like Sat Nam - I Am Truth, Truth is my Identity, or Om Mani Padmi Hum - Om, the jewel (method) in the lotus (wisdom), indivisible. or you may choose an affirmation like I love myself, I am healthy etc Its nice to create a sacred space for your meditation, so making sure you have something comfy to sit on, a cushion if needed, the light is low, maybe candles lit to bring in a nice atmosphere; you may choose to cleanse your space with sage before you start your practice. Then sitting in easy pose gently holding your mala in your right hand, draped between your middle and index fingers. Then starting at the guru bead (the big bead) use your thumb to count each smaller bead, with each repetition of your chosen mantra pulling the bead toward you as you recite your mantra. You will continue traveling around the mala until you once again reach the guru bead, which will be 108 repetitions in total.
